Having a valuable card is one thing. Being able to sell it quickly at a fair price is another. Grading affects not just how much a card sells for, but how quickly it moves.
Graded cards remove guesswork for the buyer. When someone sees a listing for a PSA 10 card, they know exactly what they're getting. The grade is standardised, the card is authenticated, and the condition is guaranteed by a third party. This reduces the friction in the buying decision.
Raw card listings require the buyer to evaluate condition from photos. Are those scratches on the surface or just reflections from the camera flash? Is the centring as good as it looks or is the seller hiding a bad angle? This uncertainty makes buyers hesitate, negotiate harder, or simply move on to a graded listing.
Looking at sell-through rates on eBay for popular cards, graded copies consistently sell faster than raw equivalents. A graded 10 of a popular card might sell within hours of listing. The same card listed raw might sit for days or weeks before finding a buyer.
The effect is most pronounced for cards in the £50 to £500 range. At this price point, buyers want certainty and are willing to pay a premium for it. Below £50, the difference is less dramatic because the financial risk of buying raw is lower.
Graded cards perform best on eBay and dedicated card marketplaces where buyers expect to see slabbed cards. On Facebook groups and local selling platforms, raw cards can actually sell just as quickly because buyers in those communities are experienced enough to assess condition from photos.
Very popular cards in obviously good condition sell quickly regardless of grading status. A clearly mint Charizard with good photos will sell fast whether it's graded or not. The grading premium adds value but doesn't necessarily add speed in these cases.
Graded cards sell faster and for more money, but you need to factor in the time and cost of grading. If you need to sell right now, listing raw is the quickest path to cash. If you can wait a few weeks for grading, the higher sale price and faster final sale usually make it worthwhile for cards over £30.
