The time between pulling a card and submitting it for grading can be weeks or months. How you store your cards during this period directly affects what grade they'll receive. Poor storage is one of the most preventable causes of grade loss.
Every card you're considering for grading should be stored the same way: penny sleeve first, then into a semi-rigid card saver or top loader, stored vertically in a storage box.
Vertical storage matters. Cards stored flat in stacks can develop pressure marks from the weight above them. Standing them upright like books prevents this.
Penny sleeves cost next to nothing but they're not all the same. Old sleeves accumulate dust and micro-particles that can scratch card surfaces. Reused sleeves that have held other cards may have invisible grit trapped inside.
For cards you plan to grade, always use new sleeves from a fresh pack. It's a 50p investment that protects a potentially expensive card.
Card Savers (specifically Card Saver 1) are the preferred choice for cards awaiting grading. They hold the card snugly without the rigidity of a top loader, which makes them easier for grading companies to open without risking damage.
Top loaders work fine too, but tape the opening shut with a bit of painter's tape (not regular sellotape or duct tape, which leave residue). Without tape, cards can slide out if the top loader gets jostled.
Store your cards in a cool, dry room away from direct sunlight. Humidity warps cards over time. Heat can affect adhesive layers and holographic patterns. UV light fades colours.
A bedroom drawer or cupboard shelf is fine. A garage, loft, or shed is not. Temperature swings and moisture in those spaces can damage cards over weeks and months.
Don't store cards in binder pages long-term if you plan to grade them. Some binder pages contain PVC which can react with card surfaces over time. Even PVC-free pages can cause surface marks from constant contact.
Don't store cards in magnetic holders with strong magnets. The magnetic closure can create pressure points on the card over time.
Don't rubber-band groups of cards together. The rubber band creates pressure lines across the cards it touches.
Don't leave cards out on your desk. Dust settles on surfaces constantly. Even a few days of exposure can coat a card in enough fine dust to affect the surface grade.
