Grading Pokémon Booster Packs: Is It Worth It?

Most people think of card grading as something you do with individual cards. But grading companies also grade sealed booster packs, and for certain packs, it can add serious value.

Why Grade a Sealed Pack?

A graded sealed pack combines two collector appeal factors: it's sealed (unopened, with the potential contents unknown) and it's been professionally authenticated and condition-rated. The slab protects it from handling and tampering, and the grade tells buyers exactly what condition the packaging is in.

For vintage packs, grading adds a layer of authentication that matters a lot. Base Set, Fossil, and Jungle packs in good condition are worth hundreds of pounds. A graded example with a high score removes any doubt about whether the pack has been searched, resealed, or tampered with.

When Pack Grading Adds Value

Vintage packs benefit most from grading. A raw Base Set Unlimited booster pack might sell for £200 to £300. A graded 9 or 10 of the same pack could sell for £400 to £700 or more, depending on the artwork variant.

First edition packs, especially from the original WOTC era, see even bigger premiums. A graded 10 first edition Base Set pack is worth thousands.

Older expansion packs from sets like Team Rocket, Gym Heroes, Gym Challenge, Neo Genesis, and Neo Discovery also benefit from grading because they're scarce and collector demand is strong.

Modern Packs: Probably Not Worth It

Grading modern booster packs from sets like Scarlet and Violet or recent Sword and Shield releases rarely makes financial sense. These packs are still readily available at retail, so there's no scarcity premium. The cost of grading (£10 to £20) on a pack worth £4 to £5 doesn't add up.

The exception might be limited promotional packs or packs from sets that have gone out of print and become popular. As sets age and supply dries up, pack grading becomes more attractive.

What Graders Look At on Packs

Pack grading focuses on the wrapper condition. Graders check for tears, creases, seal integrity, print quality, and overall presentation. A pack with a crisp, unblemished wrapper and clean seals will score highest. Packs with crimps, dents, or wrapper creases get lower grades.
