Collectors often ask how long they should hold onto graded cards before selling. The honest answer is that there's no magic holding period. But there are patterns in the Pokémon market that can help inform your timing.
When a new Pokémon set drops, the chase cards tend to be priced highest in the first few weeks. Hype is at its peak, everyone wants the new cards, and supply of graded copies hasn't built up yet. Prices typically drop over the following months as more packs get opened and more copies enter the market.
After 12 to 18 months, prices tend to stabilise. The initial hype has faded, but the set is still relatively recent. This is often the lowest point for modern chase cards.
After 2 to 3 years, popular sets start to appreciate again. Packs go out of print, supply of raw copies dries up, and collectors who missed the set initially start seeking out graded copies. This is when many modern cards begin their long-term value climb.
Vintage graded cards (anything from the WOTC era, roughly 1999 to 2003) tend to appreciate steadily over time with occasional large jumps driven by nostalgia waves or media attention. The supply of high-grade vintage cards is finite because no more are being printed. Every year, a few more get damaged or lost, making the surviving population slightly smaller.
If you're holding vintage graded cards, the general trend over any 5-year period has been upward. Short-term dips happen during market corrections, but the long-term trajectory has been positive.
The Pokémon market has experienced boom and bust cycles. The pandemic-era boom of 2020 to 2021 saw prices spike dramatically before correcting in 2022 and 2023. By 2024 and 2025, prices stabilised and many cards began climbing again.
Selling during a boom feels great. Buying during a correction feels smart. But timing the market is hard, and most collectors are better off holding cards they enjoy and selling when they personally need or want to, rather than trying to predict the next peak.
If you grade a card and it scores well, you've got a protected, authenticated collectible that takes up very little space. There's rarely a rush to sell unless you need the money. Hold it, enjoy it, and keep an eye on the market. When conditions feel right and you're ready to part with it, list it then.
