If you've been collecting Pokémon cards for any length of time, you've probably thought about getting some of them graded. It's one of those things that sounds straightforward until you actually sit down and try to work out how to do it from the UK.
For years, UK collectors had two options: send cards to PSA or BGS in the States and wait months, or just don't bother. That's changed quite a bit recently. There are now proper grading services based here in the UK, which means no customs forms, no transatlantic shipping anxiety, and turnaround times measured in weeks rather than months.
Here's the process from start to finish. It's simpler than most people expect.
First, you pick which cards you want graded. This sounds obvious, but it's worth spending time on. Not every card benefits from grading. A common card from a recent set probably isn't worth the fee unless it's in perfect condition and has some collector demand. More on that later.
Next, you need to prepare your cards properly. This means putting each card in a soft penny sleeve, then into a semi-rigid card saver or top loader. Don't use anything with excessive adhesive near the card. Don't clean your cards with anything wet. If there's dust, a very gentle brush with a microfibre cloth is fine, but honestly, less is more here.
Then you fill out a submission form. Most UK grading companies have an online system where you list what you're sending, pick your service level, and pay. You'll get a submission number and shipping instructions.
Pack your cards properly for posting. Use a rigid mailer or small box. Wrap the card savers in bubble wrap. Send it tracked. This bit matters because Royal Mail can be rough with packages, and you don't want your prized Charizard getting bent in transit.
Professional graders assess four main things: centring, corners, edges, and surface. Each gets evaluated separately, and the overall grade reflects the weakest area.
Centring is about how well the image is positioned within the card borders. Hold a card up and look at the borders on all four sides. If one side is noticeably wider than the opposite side, the centring is off. Perfect centring is rare, especially on older cards.
Corners get examined under magnification. Even tiny bits of wear that you can't see with your eyes will show up. Whitening on the corners is the most common issue.
Edges are checked for any nicks, dents, or roughness along the card's edge. Factory cuts aren't always clean, so some cards come out of the pack with edge issues.
Surface covers everything on the face and back of the card. Scratches, print lines, holo scratches, ink spots, dents. This is usually where cards lose the most points.
UK-based grading services typically offer several speed tiers. A standard service might take 15 to 20 working days. Express options can get your cards back in under a week. Bulk submissions (20+ cards) usually take longer because there's simply more work involved.
Compare that to sending cards to PSA from the UK. Even on their regular service, you're looking at several weeks for grading plus shipping time both ways. Add customs clearance and you could be waiting two to three months. Some collectors have waited longer.
Pricing varies by service level and the declared value of your card. Most UK grading services charge somewhere between £8 and £30 per card, depending on how quickly you want them back. Bulk rates bring the price down if you're sending a decent number.
You'll also need to factor in postage both ways. Sending cards to a UK grading company via Royal Mail Special Delivery costs around £7 to £8. Return shipping is usually included in the grading fee or charged at a flat rate.
That depends entirely on what you're grading. A card worth £5 raw probably isn't worth spending £15 to grade. But a card worth £50 raw that comes back as a 10 could be worth £200 or more. The maths needs to make sense for each individual card.
As a rough rule: if a card is worth £30 or more in raw condition and you think it's got a genuine shot at a 9 or 10, grading is probably worth considering.
