One of the first things people ask about card grading is "how much does it cost?" The answer is more nuanced than a single number because there are several costs involved beyond just the grading fee itself.
UK grading companies typically charge between £8 and £30 per card, depending on the service level. Here's what the tiers generally look like:
Bulk/Economy (£8 to £12 per card): Best value if you're submitting 10 or more cards. Turnaround is usually 20 to 30 working days. Good for modern cards where you're not in a rush.
Standard (£12 to £18 per card): The middle ground. Turnaround of 10 to 20 working days. Works well for most submissions.
Express (£20 to £30 per card): For when you want cards back quickly. Typically 5 to 10 working days. Worth it if you need graded cards for a sale or event.
You'll need to send your cards to the grading company, and they'll need to send them back. For sending, Royal Mail Special Delivery is the standard choice. It's tracked, insured, and costs about £7 to £8 for a small package.
Return shipping is sometimes included in the grading fee and sometimes charged separately. Expect £5 to £10 for tracked return delivery. Some companies offer free return shipping on larger submissions.
Let's work through a practical example. Say you're sending 5 cards on a standard service at £15 each:
Grading fees: 5 × £15 = £75
Outbound shipping: £8
Return shipping: £7
Total: £90
Cost per card: £18
Now the same cards on a bulk service at £10 each with 20 cards:
Grading fees: 20 × £10 = £200
Outbound shipping: £8
Return shipping: included
Total: £208
Cost per card: £10.40
The more cards you submit at once, the lower your effective cost per card because shipping gets spread across more cards.
PSA's grading fees start at around $20 per card (roughly £16) for their economy service. But you also need to factor in international shipping both ways (£20 to £40 depending on insurance), potential customs duties, VAT at 20% on the declared value coming back, and the courier handling fee (usually £8 to £12).
A 5-card PSA submission from the UK can easily cost £150 to £200 all in. That's £30 to £40 per card once you account for everything. Double what a UK service would charge for similar turnaround.
As a rule of thumb, don't spend more than 20 to 30 percent of a card's raw value on grading unless you're very confident it'll score high. A £50 raw card is worth grading at £15. A £10 raw card generally isn't, unless you're grading for personal reasons rather than financial ones.
