The card grading world is full of received wisdom that gets passed around collector groups without anyone checking whether it's actually true. Let's sort through the most common myths.
This is probably the most widespread misconception. A brand new card straight from a sealed pack can have factory defects: print lines, off-centre cutting, surface texture issues, ink spots, or corner damage from the packaging process. Some studies suggest fewer than 30% of pack-fresh modern cards would achieve a 10 grade. The factory is not a clean room. Quality varies between print runs.
PSA is the most recognised name, but it's not the only option that holds value. BGS, CGC, and UK-based grading companies all have established markets. The premium for PSA is strongest on high-end vintage cards. For modern cards under £200 raw, the difference between a PSA grade and a grade from another reputable company is often minimal.
Some people claim grades are random or inconsistent. In reality, professional graders undergo extensive training and follow standardised criteria. Are there occasional inconsistencies? Yes, as with any human evaluation. But the idea that grades are arbitrary or meaningless doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Most resubmissions receive the same or a very similar grade.
This one circulates in online groups regularly. The claim is that putting a warped card in the freezer flattens it out. While temperature changes can temporarily affect card shape, they can also cause the card layers to separate, create condensation damage, and make the card more brittle. Don't put your cards in the freezer.
Card thickness varies between sets and print runs. A thicker card is not inherently a better card. Graders assess condition, not card stock weight. Some perfectly graded 10s are on thinner stock. Some heavily worn cards are on thick stock. Thickness tells you about the print run, not the grade.
To the naked eye, a 9 and a 10 might look identical. But in terms of market value, they're often worlds apart. The premium for perfection is real and significant. A 9 is an excellent grade, but it's not a 10. Treating them as interchangeable will lead to disappointment when selling.
