The question every collector eventually asks: should I grade this card first or just sell it raw? The answer depends on the specific card, its condition, and whether you've got the patience to wait for grading. Let's run through some realistic scenarios.
Card: Charizard ex Special Art Rare (Obsidian Flames)
Raw sale price: £85
Grading cost (standard): £15
Postage both ways: £14
Total grading cost: £29
If it grades a 10: sell for £220. Profit after grading costs: £191. Net gain vs raw: £106.
If it grades a 9: sell for £130. Profit after grading costs: £101. Net gain vs raw: £16.
If it grades an 8: sell for £95. Profit after grading costs: £66. Net loss vs raw: -£19.
The verdict: worth grading if you're confident it'll score 9 or above. An 8 loses you money compared to selling raw.
Card: Base Set Blastoise (unlimited holo)
Raw sale price: £60
Grading cost: £15
Postage: £14
Total: £29
Grade 10: sell for £350. Net gain vs raw: £261.
Grade 9: sell for £150. Net gain vs raw: £61.
Grade 7: sell for £80. Net gain vs raw: -£9.
Grade 5: sell for £50. Net loss vs raw: -£39.
Vintage is high risk, high reward. The ceiling is enormous but a low grade can cost you money. Only submit vintage cards you're genuinely confident about.
Card: Pikachu V Full Art (common pull)
Raw sale price: £8
Grading cost: £15
Postage: £14
Total: £29
Grade 10: sell for £25. Net loss vs raw: -£12.
Grade 9: sell for £15. Net loss vs raw: -£22.
Even a perfect 10 loses money. Don't grade cheap cards for profit.
As a rough guideline, you need the graded sale price to be at least £30 higher than the raw price to cover grading and postage costs and still come out ahead. If the grading premium for a 10 isn't at least that much, the maths doesn't work for profit-motivated grading.
