It seems logical: clean the card, make it look better, get a higher grade. In practice, cleaning almost always causes more damage than it prevents. The grading community has been burned by this enough times that "don't clean your cards" is one of the most repeated pieces of advice you'll hear.
Card surfaces are more delicate than they look. The printed layer is thin and easily scratched. Even a soft microfibre cloth, if used with any pressure, can create micro-scratches visible under the magnification graders use. These scratches might be invisible to your naked eye but they'll show up during grading.
Any moisture is an immediate risk. Water, glass cleaner, isopropyl alcohol, or any other liquid can warp the cardstock, dissolve the adhesive between layers, or cause ink to run. Even a tiny amount of moisture that seems to dry without a trace can leave marks visible under UV light.
If your card has visible dust on the surface, a single very gentle pass with a clean, dry microfibre cloth is the absolute maximum intervention you should attempt. Use no pressure. Let the cloth glide across the surface with its own weight. One pass. Done.
For dust in crevices or around the card edges, a single puff of air from your mouth (not compressed air, which can be too forceful) can dislodge particles.
Rubbing with a cloth: Creates micro-scratches. Even "lens cleaning" cloths can damage card surfaces.
Using erasers: Some people try to erase marks or residue. This removes the surface coating and creates visible damage.
Compressed air cans: The propellant can leave a chemical residue on the card. It can also blast with enough force to dent or bend the card at close range.
Sticky tape to lift debris: Adhesive residue transfers to the card surface and is nearly impossible to remove without causing more damage.
Submit your cards as they are. Graders have seen everything. A bit of dust won't significantly affect a grade, but cleaning damage will. If a card has actual grime, residue, or stains, those are permanent condition issues that cleaning won't fix. Accept the card's current state and let the grade reflect its genuine condition.
